Concebido en el siglo XVI como lugar de retiro de Felipe II, el Palacio de La Fresneda forma parte del paisaje histórico vinculado al gran proyecto renacentista de la Corona española. Inspirado en los modelos de las villas de campo que se desarrollaban en Europa en aquella época, este enclave fue diseñado para el disfrute y descanso de la Familia Real durante sus estancias en El Escorial.
De los parques y jardines que Felipe II creó alrededor de Madrid, La Granjilla, antigua Fresneda, responde a un concepto único: la naturaleza urbanizada.
