The ponds

The ponds at the Palacio de la Fresneda represent one of Spain's most unique examples of Renaissance hydraulic engineering. Conceived in the 16th century as part of the grand landscape project championed by Philip II, they were designed by the Dutch engineer Petre Janson, a specialist in the construction of dams and reservoirs.

Its construction transformed the natural landscape of La Fresneda into an extraordinary pleasure garden for the Crown, where nature, architecture, and water were integrated in accordance with Renaissance ideals. Fed by the waters of the Aulencia River through a complex network of ditches, canals, and hydraulic structures, the four large royal ponds constituted one of the complex's most innovative and admired features.

More than four centuries later, they remain a defining feature of La Granjilla and the Palace of La Fresneda. Their expansive stretches of water, the surrounding natural landscape, and their exceptional historical value transform this site into a setting of great beauty and character—one especially prized for audiovisual productions, photo shoots, and exclusive events seeking an authentic, elegant, and historically rich backdrop.
